Howden Compressors, Howden Roots Blowers, Garage Heaters, and Freezer Burn: A Buyer’s Checklist

Why I’m the one writing this

I approve equipment purchase orders for a living. I’m a procurement manager at a 140-person industrial refrigeration service company, and I’ve managed our equipment budget—about $2.1M a year—for the last eight years. I’ve negotiated with more than 40 vendors and documented every order in our cost tracking system.

I’ve also spent weekends trying to keep a cold garage warm. So I understand why a $120 buddy heater can feel like an easy decision, and why a $60,000 compressor doesn’t.

The 5-step checklist

Step 1. Define the duty, not the machine

The question isn’t, “Which Howden compressor should I get?” It’s “What job does this equipment have to do for the next ten years?”

For a compressor or blower, write down the required flow, pressure, operating hours, ambient temperature, and the refrigerant or gas involved. For a garage heater, write down the size of the space, insulation level, and whether the room can supply combustion air. For a freezer, write down the warmest temperature you can accept at the center of a product load.

It’s tempting to think a bigger unit is a safer unit. The “bigger is safer” advice ignores the damage done by oversizing: short cycling, moisture problems, more starts, and higher energy use. Simple.

Step 2. Build the full cost picture

The sticker price is not the cost. I built a TCO spreadsheet after getting burned on hidden fees twice, and now every equipment request has to go through it.

For a Howden roots blower package, the quote might cover the blower, baseplate, coupling, guard, and test run. It might not cover inlet filters, silencers, control wiring, or installation labor. On one project, the low bidder was 18% lower than the next quote. Once we added piping, commissioning, and the controls they’d excluded, their total landed 9% above the mid-price vendor.

For the buddy heater in my garage, the TCO was simpler: $120 for the heater, plus $75 for a carbon monoxide alarm and a couple of extra housekeeping items. Still worth it. But if I had ignored the extra costs, the budget would have been wrong before I even opened the box.

Step 3. Match the specs to the real environment

I’ve bought equipment that looked right on paper and failed in the field because the environment was different. Voltage drops, dusty air, hot attics, and partially insulated garages don’t show up in a brochure.

When I review a Howden compressor for a cold storage plant, I check the capacity at the actual evaporating and condensing temperatures, not at the nominal rating condition. Same for a Howden roots blower: I ask for the flow curve at the actual inlet pressure. A roots blower is a positive displacement machine; if the inlet conditions change, the mass flow changes even when the volume flow stays the same.

And for a garage heater, BTU ratings are only useful if the room has enough air for combustion and the electrical circuit can handle the blower motor. I once bought a 30,000 BTU unit without checking the circuit. It tripped. Constant maintenance.

Step 4. Verify the service history before you sign

Paper specifications tell you what a machine should do. A service history tells you what it actually does in a plant that runs it hard.

I don’t have hard data on how many Howden roots blowers from the 1990s are still in service. But based on the ones I’ve seen in the field, my sense is many of them get rebuilt rather than scrapped. That sort of track record matters.

Ask for references with the same duty cycle. Call them. Ask about spare parts lead times, oil consumption, vibration issues, and how the vendor handled commissioning. For the heater, the equivalent is checking whether the manufacturer publishes manuals and sells replacement parts. I want to say the buddy heater I bought has an oxygen depletion sensor and a readily available service kit, but don’t quote me on the exact part number—I’d have to check the box.

Step 5. Prove it before you scale

Before we roll out a new compressor or blower to a whole site, we run it on one system. The last thing you want is a plant-wide launch with an issue that could have been caught on a single skid.

The same logic applies to frozen food. If you want to prevent freezer burn, test your packaging and temperature controls on one tray, one box, or one pallet before you freeze the whole batch.

How to prevent freezer burn (the part most people skip)

Freezer burn looks like frost or white patches on food. From the outside, it looks like temperature abuse. The reality is usually air reaching the surface. Cold, dry air sublimes the ice on the food, and the exposed area dehydrates.

The USDA says freezer burn is safe to eat, but it changes texture and flavor. It’s a quality issue. For a brand, quality is the brand.

Four habits that work:

  • Set the freezer to 0°F (-18°C) or lower. According to FDA guidance, 0°F is the recommended temperature for frozen food storage.
  • Pack food in moisture-proof materials and squeeze out air. Vacuum bags are better than plastic wrap.
  • Cool food first before putting it in the freezer. Large batches of warm food push a freezer into a long pulldown, and temperature swings cause ice crystal growth.
  • Keep door openings short and keep the condenser clean. A cold room with a poorly matched compressor will develop more frost because the air spends too much time above setpoint.

In the cold storage plant, we watched frost complaints drop after replacing a tired reciprocating compressor with a correctly sized Howden compressor. The new unit didn’t cycle as often, so product surface temperatures stayed steady. I wish I had tracked the exact percentage reduction—I’d have to go back into our quality logs—but the difference was visible in the first month.

Common errors that turn good equipment into bad purchases

Falling for the cheapest quote. The lowest first number creates a great story until the installation cost appears. One $4,200 quoted blower ended up costing us $5,600 after the vendor charged separately for controls and rigging. The “cheap” option resulted in a $1,200 redo after a leaking flange caused a weekend service call.

Ignoring maintenance access. A compressor can be excellent, but if you can’t get a wrench on the oil filter, it won’t be maintained. Ask for service clearance drawings before the purchase, not after.

Assuming a garage heater can be used like an outdoor fire pit. Indoor-rated propane heaters exist for a reason. Check the certification label, keep the ventilation path open, and never use something in a garage that isn’t listed for that purpose.

The quality lesson that ties this together

Quality is not a luxury line item. It’s how customers remember you.

A frost-covered package makes a customer suspect the cold chain even if the food is safe. A rattling blower makes a plant manager question every other piece of equipment in the room. A garage heater that smells like burning dust on first use makes a guest wonder whether your whole house is unsafe.

The difference between a good Howden compressor and a not-so-good one isn’t only efficiency. It’s the confidence that the machine will hold its spec when it matters. That confidence is a brand asset. Don’t outsource it to the lowest bidder.

That’s my checklist. Define the real duty, price the total cost, check the environment, verify the history, prove the output. And for cold rooms and garages alike, don’t skip the details that make the final product look right. Period.
