Howden Compressors, DeWalt Blowers, Bladeless Fans, and How to Flush a Hot Water Heater: A Scenario-Based Buyer's Guide

Why there is no single answer

I'm the office administrator for a 450-person manufacturing company. I manage all MRO and facilities ordering—roughly $1.2M annually across 12 vendors. I report to both operations and finance. When I took over purchasing in 2020, I assumed every request had one best answer. In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I learned that the right answer depends heavily on the scenario.

Three scenarios cover most of the requests I see: process-critical industrial air and gas handling, commercial or workshop air movement and cleanup, and water system maintenance. Scenario A: Process-critical industrial air and gas handling

If the equipment touches production, refrigeration, or a process line, you're not buying a fan. You're buying uptime. According to the Compressed Air and Gas Institute (CAGI), compressed air can account for 10–30% of industrial electricity use. That's why a slightly more efficient package can pay back quickly—but only if the vendor can prove the numbers with a performance curve and a clear testing standard.

For Howden compressors, ask for the performance curve at your operating conditions, not just a nominal rating. Ask about oil carryover, vibration limits, noise, and foundation requirements. For a Howden Roots rotary lobe blower, check the lobe clearance, timing gears, and bearing life. These details determine whether the unit lasts 5 years or 20.

What most people don't realize is that 'standard turnaround' often includes buffer time that vendors use to manage their production queue. It's not necessarily how long YOUR order takes. So ask for the actual lead time for your configuration, not the catalog number.

People think expensive vendors deliver better quality. Actually, vendors who deliver quality can charge more. The causation runs the other way. That doesn't mean cheap is always bad. It means you compare lifecycle cost, spare parts, and service response—not just the first number on the quote.

Scenario B: Commercial or workshop air movement and cleanup

Not every air request is industrial. Sometimes it's clearing sawdust from a maintenance bay, drying a wet floor, or keeping an office corner comfortable. That's where a DeWalt blower or a bladeless fan might be the right tool—or the wrong one.

If you need cleanup, not process air

A DeWalt blower is a good fit for intermittent jobsite cleanup, moving light debris, and drying surfaces. Basic flush sequence

  1. Turn off power or gas. For gas, set the thermostat to pilot or off.
  2. Close the cold-water inlet valve.
  3. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve and run it to a safe drain.
  4. Open a hot-water tap somewhere to prevent vacuum.
  5. Open the drain valve and let it run until the water is clear.
  6. Close the drain, open the cold inlet, and refill the tank.
  7. Bleed air from the hot taps, then restore power or gas only after the tank is full.

If the drain valve is plastic or corroded, call a plumber. I've seen a $12 plastic valve turn into a $400 repair because someone forced it. (Ugh, again.) For a commercial building, also check local codes and whether the tank requires an annual inspection by a licensed contractor.

If you're managing a commercial property, you may need to document the flush for insurance or warranty. Take a photo of the drain water before and after, and log the date. It sounds excessive until a tank fails early and the manufacturer asks for maintenance records.

How to tell which scenario you're in

Ask these questions before you buy:

  • Does this equipment touch production, refrigeration, or a regulated process? If yes, Scenario A.
  • Is the job intermittent cleanup, comfort, or drying? If yes, Scenario B.
  • Is the goal maintaining water quality, pressure, or energy efficiency? If yes, Scenario C.
  • What happens if it stops? If downtime costs thousands per hour, don't buy consumer-grade. If downtime means someone grabs a broom, a DeWalt blower may be fine.
  • Who will service it? If no one on site can maintain it, factor in a service contract and spare parts.

If you're still unsure, write down the cost of downtime. Then write down the cost of the equipment. If downtime is more than 10 times the equipment cost, you're likely in Scenario A. If downtime is less than the equipment cost, you're likely in Scenario B or C. That's not a perfect rule, but it's faster than arguing about brands.

An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. That's why I'd rather walk through the scenario than push a single SKU. The right answer for a Howden compressor project is not the right answer for a bladeless fan in a conference room—and neither one tells you how to flush a hot water heater.
