- What are the operating conditions—ambient temperature, altitude, contaminants?
- What is the load profile? Continuous, intermittent, or peak?
- Who will service it, and how much clearance is needed?
- What documentation do you provide—curves, drawings, submittals?
If a quote is one page and doesn't include a model number, performance data, or a submittal schedule, I treat it as a placeholder.
If a supplier doesn't want to answer those, I don't need them. It's sort of like buying a bathroom exhaust fan: the numbers matter more than the style.
Buy the Specification, Not the Mystery Box
Honestly, I wish I had tracked every wrong-order reason from 2020 to now. What I can say anecdotally is that the expensive lessons always came from missing information, not missing horsepower. I wish I'd realized that sooner.
