How I Learned to Stop Chasing Cheap Blowers and Trust Howden for Ammonia Refrigeration

Back in 2019, I was assigned to help spec the ventilation and ammonia refrigeration system for a mid-size cold storage warehouse. My boss said, 'Just find something that works and doesn't break the budget.' Simple, right? Seven months and a lot of wasted money later, I wish I'd known then what I know now.

The Setup: A New Project, Big Plans

But if your ammonia charge is under 100 pounds and your load is stable, a smaller reciprocating compressor might be a better fit. The Howden engineer actually recommended a competitor for that edge case—and that honesty earned my loyalty for life.

The Lesson: Expensive Mistakes Are Cheaper Than Cheap Equipment

After the third rejection of cheap blowers and compressors in Q1 2023, I created our department's pre-purchase checklist. It includes:

  • Verify the fan's static pressure rating at operating point (not just max).
  • For ammonia, check discharge temperature envelope and oil cooling requirements.
  • Ask the vendor: 'What are you worst at?' If they won't answer, walk away.
